5 Things to Know Before Renting Roll-Off Containers

So you’re starting a renovation or demolition project. You (or the crew you hire) are going to be generating a huge amount of waste, and even a dozen waste bins will get filled up quickly. Having a roll-off container parked outside is the best, most efficient way to collect it all. Before finalizing arrangements for your roll-off container rental, make sure you know what to expect.

  1. They Really Do Roll

If you’ve never used roll-off containers before, you might not know exactly what they are. These containers are essentially large, open-top dumpsters with wheels. Those wheels allow the delivery company to – you guessed it – roll a container off the back of a truck. That makes delivery easier than it is with traditional dumpsters, which have to be hoisted up and down.

  1. Placement Matters

The driver who delivers your roll-off container will take your direction when placing the container, so scope out the landscape before ordering delivery. Level concrete or asphalt surfaces work best. A driver who works for a reputable company should know how to minimize ground damage during the loading and unloading process. But roll-off containers may leave indentations or marks on some surfaces; and the heavier the load, the more damage it can do. Your delivery company may be able to place wood blocks under the wheels to minimize any marking. Customers should also think about whether the roll-off container’s position will cause problems.  For example, if you place the container in front of a loading dock and the job takes longer than you expect, what will happen if you need to receive deliveries on that dock?roll-off container on truck

  1. Size Matters, Too

Order a roll-off container that’s too large and you’ll end up paying more than necessary. The same is true if you order one that’s too small – either you’ll have to pay to rent a second container or find another way to dispose of the waste that doesn’t fit into the first container. Overfilling a too-small container won’t work either because the driver can’t haul it away if there’s junk spilling out over the top.

  1. Sometimes Buying Makes More Sense

For a one-time or short-term project, renting a roll-off container is generally the best choice. But for customers who anticipate an ongoing need for a container, or those who often need a container on short notice, buying your own might make more sense. Arranging for the container to be picked up, emptied and returned is the biggest challenge of ownership.

  1. Not All Materials Can Go In

Trash and recyclable material are two distinctive grades.  Metals have value and can be recycled.  Mixed demo materials, mix plastics and “trash” cannot.  Material such as paint, mattresses, propane tanks, or tires will usually generate an additional charge.  Be sure to ask your disposal company what “is” and “isn’t” allowed.
